People that fall morally in a marriage:

  • No Accountability
  • Not Regularly in the Word
  • They never thought it would happen to them

John states that he then lives like “a coward” like it could happen to him. He prays, “lead me not into temptation” every day. He has accountability that ask him specific questions all the time, and have prayer partners.

Tonight I’m listening to a conversation between Andy Stanley and John Maxwell. Key points.

    Living in your strengths:

    On a 0 to 10 scale

    • If you are a 3 then you might get to a 5 in an area. Nobody will pay for a 5. If you are a 8 you could get to a 10…and a 10 can get before kings and rulers.
    • 8’s and 9’s don’t follow 2’s and 3’s
    • Example: Did Jesus spend an equal amount of time with everyone, he spent time with those who he knew would lead. He didn’t spend an equal amount of time with the 12 apostles either. Jesus took Peter, James, and John to places where he didn’t take the others. If leaders do this nowadays…others would say that it wasn’t fair.
    • “put your best with the best (in leadership)” and it will filter down.
    • The Chicago Bulls (with Michael Jordan)…with one shot to go they gave the ball to Michael. The coach doesn’t apologize to the team for giving the ball to the best player on the team. The best player gives THE TEAM the best chance to win. What do we do in the church?
    • We attract who we are instead of what we want.

Skills and abilities can go up 2 points. Attitudes of choice can go from 0-10. The more amount of choice you have in a situation the more you can move the bar.

Application: Find the greatest potential leaders to pour yourself into. You can take a 6 or 7 to a 8 or 9, and they will do amazing things. You will see the greatest return for the kingdom of God with those people. This doesn’t have to do with spiritual development. Spiritual development is a choice, not a skill set.

    Applications for Me:

    • In a non-profit, you need to know that you are a team with a GOAL and souls are at stake. The kingdom of God is at stake. So one of the first things that needs to be done is that we need to know we are on a team with a purpose that extends and goes beyond our everyday lives.
    • I’m not very pastoral. I like dealing with leaders and people that are hungry to move now. This teaching is freeing because it draws a line between skills and choice. Spiritual development is a choice. The choice for spiritual development is the individual, and I can’t help them if they don’t make that choice. I can, however, focus on the leadership and develop potential.
    • I can’t grow a 7 to an 8 when I’m a 6.
